Lake Eyasi Cultural Experience

Meet the Hadzabe and Datoga at the base of the Ngorongoro Highlands — a way of life that predates agriculture, unchanged for millennia.
The Experience

Africa’s Last Hunter-Gatherers

Lake Eyasi sits on the southern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, framed by the dramatic Ngorongoro Highlands and the Great Rift Valley. This remote, culturally rich destination offers a rare opportunity to engage with some of Tanzania’s most distinctive indigenous communities, providing meaningful insight into traditional ways of life that have endured for generations.
This region is home to the Hadzabe and the Datoga—two culturally significant groups whose lifestyles differ markedly from mainstream society. Here, you can connect with these unique communities in a remote, unspoiled setting at the base of the Ngorongoro Highlands.
The Hadzabe are among the last true hunter-gatherers in Africa, living in close harmony with their environment. During your visit, you’ll experience daily life with the Hadzabe, learn about traditional hunting with bows and arrows, animal tracking, and the identification of edible plants and wild fruits—a glimpse into a lifestyle that predates agriculture and has remained unchanged for millennia.
A guided bush walk further reveals the Hadzabe’s deep knowledge of their environment. You’ll learn about medicinal plants, natural remedies, and survival skills at the heart of their culture.
Visiting the neighboring Datoga community adds another layer to the experience. The Datoga are skilled pastoralists and master blacksmiths, renowned for crafting tools, weapons, and jewelry using age-old techniques. You’ll observe their metalworking craft and gain insight into their customs, social structure, and daily routines—including livestock management and trade.
