Katavi National Park
The Spirit of Wild Afrika
The park derives its name from the Wabende spirit, Kata, believed to inhabit a sacred tamarind tree near Lake Katavi. Local communities regularly visit this revered site, leaving offerings at the base of the tree to seek blessings and protection. According to legend, the tree is also the spiritual home of a famed huntsman, Katabi, whose presence is said to watch over the area. Officially gazetted as a national park in 1974 and expanded in 1997, Katavi now spans an impressive 4,471 square kilometres.
This pristine wilderness shelters the world's largest herds of buffalo and supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. The landscape ranges from vast grassland plains to dramatic rift valley escarpments, with a mosaic of woodlands, scrublands, swamps, and lush riverine vegetation. The Katuma River and the seasonally flooded plains of Lakes Katavi and Chada are the primary game-viewing areas, attracting large concentrations of animals — especially during the dry season when water becomes scarce and wildlife gathers in spectacular numbers.

When to Visit
Best Time to Go
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from June to late October. During this period, the two seasonal lakes on the Kitasunga Plain are drained by the Katuma River, acting as magnets that draw thousands of plains game to congregate — one of Afrika's most dramatic and least-witnessed wildlife spectacles.
