Gombe, Mahale, and Katavi — Tanzania's most remote and exclusive circuit, where chimpanzees swing through ancient forest, vast buffalo herds fill the plains, and Lake Tanganyika's crystal waters stretch to the horizon.
Tanzania's Western Circuit is for those who want something truly extraordinary. Tucked against the shores of Lake Tanganyika — the world's second-deepest lake — and stretching into the remote interior, this circuit delivers experiences that exist nowhere else on the continent.
Come face to face with chimpanzees on a jungle trek at Gombe or Mahale. Watch thousands of buffalo thunder across the dry plains of Katavi. Swim in the crystal waters of Lake Tanganyika as the Afrikan sun sets behind the mountains. The Western Circuit rewards those who make the journey.

Three Parks, One Extraordinary Journey
From the chimp-filled forests of Gombe and Mahale to the untamed buffalo plains of Katavi, the Western Circuit is Afrika at its most raw and unforgettable.
Gombe National Park
Afrika's smallest national park and the birthplace of chimpanzee research — where Jane Goodall began her legendary study in 1960 on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
Habituated chimpanzees — one of Afrika's most intimate wildlife encounters
Five other primate species including red colobus and olive baboon
A vast, remote wilderness in Tanzania's interior — home to some of the world's largest buffalo herds and spectacular dry-season concentrations of wildlife around seasonal lakes.
World's largest buffalo herds gathering at seasonal floodplain lakes
Exceptional lion prides, hippos, and crocodiles in enormous numbers
Almost no other visitors — total wilderness experience

The Western Circuit Experience
Primates, Plains & Pristine Lake
The Western Circuit offers encounters that are simply unavailable anywhere else in Tanzania — or in much of the world. It demands more travel, but rewards with experiences that stay with you for a lifetime.
Chimpanzee Trekking
Both Gombe and Mahale offer fully habituated chimpanzee groups — sitting within metres of a chimpanzee family in their forest home is among the most profound wildlife experiences on the planet.
Katavi’s Buffalo Spectacle
During the dry season, thousands of buffalo, hippos, and lions converge on Katavi’s shrinking lakes in one of Afrika’s most dramatic and least-witnessed wildlife congregations.
Lake Tanganyika
The world’s second-deepest freshwater lake — crystal-clear, warm, and teeming with hundreds of endemic fish species. Snorkelling, kayaking, and sunset dhow cruises complete the experience.
True Remoteness
The Western Circuit is the least-visited of Tanzania’s three safari circuits. You may trek for hours without encountering another visitor — true wilderness immersion in a world of disappearing wild places.
Exceptional Birdlife
Mahale’s Pel’s fishing owl, Gombe’s forest specialists, and Katavi’s open-country species combine to make the Western Circuit a rewarding destination for serious birders year-round.

When to Visit the Western Circuit
Mahale is accessible year-round for chimpanzee trekking. Katavi and Gombe are at their best during the dry season, when wildlife and chimps are most concentrated and easily observed.

Peak Season
June – October
The dry season is the best time for all three parks. Chimps descend to lower forest elevations at Gombe and Mahale, making trekking more rewarding. At Katavi, wildlife masses around the drying lakes in extraordinary concentrations.
Good Season
Jan – Feb • Nov – Dec
Mahale is a year-round destination — the chimps are always trackable and the lake is always inviting. Gombe is good outside the long rains. Katavi sees fewer visitors and is accessible during these transitional months.
Low Season
March – May
Tanzania's long rains. Katavi's tracks become challenging and some camps close. Gombe chimpanzees move higher into the forest canopy. Mahale remains open throughout and the forest is at its most lush and vivid green.
