Nyerere, Ruaha, Mikumi, and Udzungwa — Tanzania's wild, remote, and least-visited safari circuit, where wild dogs roam freely and boat safaris glide through Afrika's largest protected wetland.
Tanzania's Southern Circuit is the country's most untouched safari destination. Spanning from the vast floodplains of the Rufiji River to the mist-covered peaks of the Udzungwa Mountains, this circuit offers a safari experience defined by remoteness, exclusivity, and raw wilderness.
Where the Northern Circuit draws the crowds, the South offers solitude. Here, African wild dogs course through open woodland, boat safaris drift past hippopotami on the Rufiji, and ancient baobabs stand sentinel over landscapes that have changed little in a thousand years.

Parks in This Circuit
Four Parks, One Wild Frontier
Each park in the Southern Circuit guards its own secrets — from Afrika'slargest protected wetland to primate-filled mountain forests. Together they form Tanzania's most exclusive safari experience.
Nyerere National Park
Afrika's largest national park — a vast floodplain wilderness of channels, lakes, and open plains where boat safaris bring you face to face with hippos and crocodiles.
Boat safaris on the Rufiji River — unique in Tanzania
Afrika's largest wild dog population in one protected area
Massive elephant herds and lion prides on open floodplains
Tanzania's most accessible southern park — just 300 km from Dar es Salaam, with open Mkata floodplains that rival the Serengeti for plains game viewing.
Open floodplains with lion, elephant, buffalo and zebra
Giraffe, wildebeest and impala in huge concentrations
Nyerere National Park — Afrika's largest national park by area
The Southern Circuit Experience
Remote, Raw & Extraordinary
The Southern Circuit delivers an Africa untouched by mass tourism. The landscapes are wilder, the sightings more personal, and the sense of discovery unmatched anywhere else in Tanzania.
African Wild Dogs
The Southern Circuit — Nyerere in particular — holds one of Africa’s most significant wild dog populations. Watching a pack hunt across the open floodplains is among the continent’s rarest wildlife encounters.
Boat Safaris on the Rufiji
Gliding silently through the channels of Nyerere on a boat safari brings you within metres of hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds in a way no game drive can replicate. A completely unique Tanzania experience.
Walking Safaris
The Southern Circuit is Tanzania’s premier walking safari destination. Moving on foot through Nyerere and Ruaha with armed guides transforms the safari from observation into participation.
Exclusive Wilderness
A fraction of the visitors that crowd the Northern Circuit. In the South you may spend an entire morning in the wilderness without encountering another vehicle — a rarity in modern Africa.
Mountain & Forest Primates
Udzungwa’s ancient montane forests shelter endemic primate species and cascade waterfalls — a completely different ecosystem from the plains, and a dramatic contrast to the other Southern parks.

Peak Season
Jun – Oct • Feb
The dry season is when wildlife concentrates around the Rufiji River and Great Ruaha River. Game viewing is at its finest — animals are easy to spot in thinning vegetation, and boat safaris are at their most productive.
Good Season
Jan • Dec
Transitional months with pleasant conditions and fewer visitors. Birdlife is excellent, landscapes are green, and lodge rates are lower. Udzungwa's waterfalls are at their most dramatic after the rains ease.
Low Season
March – May • Nov
Tanzania's long rains bring lush landscapes and the lowest rates of the year. Some tracks and airstrips may be affected. However, Udzungwa is excellent year-round, and dedicated explorers find the South rewarding in all seasons.
