Ruaha National Park
Where Two Worlds Meet
Ruaha National Park is renowned for its rich wildlife — particularly its thriving lion population and remarkable bird diversity. Often described as a hidden gem, the park provides an intimate safari experience with far fewer crowds than more famous destinations. A true biodiversity hotspot, Ruaha hosts both northern and southern species, making it ecologically unique in all of Afrika. Its name is derived from the Hehe word "Luhava," meaning "the great river."
Tanzania's second-largest national park, Ruaha lies approximately 130 kilometres west of Iringa and spans more than 20,000 square kilometres. The park shelters elephants, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, and a remarkable variety of antelope. Designated as a Lion Conservation Unit, Ruaha is celebrated for its impressive lion numbers — some of Tanzania's most powerful prides hunt here.
Home to over 500 bird species — including rarities like the Afrikan skimmer — Ruaha is a paradise for birdwatchers. Its diverse landscapes, from sweeping grasslands to the majestic Great Ruaha River, foster an extraordinary array of habitats. During the dry season, wildlife congregates around the river in spectacular concentrations, offering game viewing that rivals any park in East Afrika.
Ruaha is notably one of the few parks where Greater and Lesser Kudu as well as sable and roan antelopes are found together — a combination that draws serious wildlife enthusiasts from across the world.
