Olduvai Gorge

Stand at the edge of millions of years of history — the “Cradle of Humankind,” where the Leakeys uncovered the story of human evolution.
The Experience

The Cradle of Humankind

Olduvai Gorge, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of northern Tanzania, stands as one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites. This UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves an extraordinary record of early human life within its layered cliffs. Often referred to as the “Cradle of Humankind,” Olduvai Gorge has been vital in unraveling the story of human evolution.
Set within the Great Rift Valley, between the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, the gorge stretches for about 48 kilometers and plunges to depths of 90 meters. Its dramatic landscape - red ochre earth, scattered shrubs, and eroded rock formations-creates an otherworldly atmosphere, often compared to Martian terrain.
Their discoveries also included early stone tools and evidence of hunting and scavenging, illuminating the intelligence and adaptability of early humans. After Louis Leakey’s passing, Mary continued the research and later mentored her son, Richard Leakey, extending this remarkable scientific legacy.
You will visit the modern Olduvai Gorge Museum - a small but informative center founded by Mary Leakey in 1970 and rebuilt in 2017. The museum displays fossils, ancient tools, and detailed exhibits that vividly illustrate the site’s history and the story of human evolution.
A guided visit lets you stand at the edge of millions of years of history, observing the distinct geological layers that reveal how landscapes and life have changed over time. Nearby, the Laetoli footprints—preserved in volcanic ash for over 3.6 million years - offer an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of the earliest hominins.
For a deeper experience, consider a guided walking safari (about 1.5–2 hours) into the gorge. This immersive trek leads you to key excavation sites where history was made. Traversing these ancient layers offers a profound connection to the prehistoric world and the origins of humankind.
