The Mountain

The Roof of Africa

Mount Meru is a stunning dormant volcanic mountain located within Arusha National Park in northern Tanzania, just a short distance from the town of Arusha. Rising to about 4,566 meters (14,980 ft), it is the second-highest peak in the country after Mount Kilimanjaro, yet it offers a quieter and more intimate trekking experience. The mountain is known for its dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater, formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, and its diverse landscapes that range from lush rainforest and open moorland to alpine desert and a rugged summit ridge known as Socialist Peak.
What makes Mount Meru particularly unique is the combination of trekking and wildlife, as the lower slopes are home to animals such as giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys, making the ascent feel like a walking safari. Typically climbed in 3 to 4 days via the Momella route, it is often used for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro, but it stands out as a rewarding adventure on its own, offering spectacular views—including breathtaking sunrises over Kilimanjaro—and a peaceful, less crowded atmosphere.
